Until recently, I never thought about how to journal.
I always just did it naturally, but I realize that a lot of you want to know tips! So here are a few journaling tips for those of you who are new to the activity.
#1) Decide why you want to journal. It’s good to have a little motivation because there may be days when you want to give up, or you feel like it’s a pointless endeavor. Do you want to remember things going on in your life for future reference? Is this for fun? Are you going through a tough time or trying to figure something out? Will you give this to your future grandchildren? Just have a general idea of why you’re journaling.
#2) Pick your journal! Tip #1 will help you with this task 🙂 For example, if this journal needs to last a couple generations, pick one that feels more durable. If it’s just for fun, you could choose a colorful spiral notebook (that honestly might not make it past a couple of coffee spills). There are refillable notebooks, leather, ones with locks, customizable personal journals, passport sized, ones with pockets…the options are endless. Start with one that you think you’ll enjoy writing in!
#3) Carve out time. I recommend scheduling time to journal so that you remember to do it and actually have the time…it can be tough to spend time on something that doesn’t seem essential or urgent. But I really hope you will treat journaling just like any other commitment in your life, like going to the gym or cleaning your home. Journaling may just be a hobby, but you deserve some time to yourself to be creative or work through thoughts, etc.
#4) Write about anything. You can write about your day (my personal favorite thing to journal) or an event…Maybe you read a good book that you want to jot down quotes from. Include pictures, ticket stubs, stamps, or anything you like! If you don’t know what to write about one day (happens to me, too) refer back to tip #1–think about why you’re journaling and maybe that will inspire you. For example, if you want to journal about being a new mom, so you can remember what it was like the 1st time around, maybe write what baby did today or a parenting tip you learned.
#5) Store your journal in the right place. Keep it secret, keep it safe…haha! Ignore me being a nerd and let’s continue. Basically, keep your journal in a place where you will remember to use it! Maybe on your bedside table or next to the computer. On the other hand, if you don’t want anyone to read it, you might keep it in a more discreet location. Just a tip, because I will sometimes put mine some place where it starts to collect dust (out of sight, out of mind, as they say) <3
Alrighty, I think 5 tips for how to journal is a great place to end this!
