Wondering about the best nail color for dark skin tones?
Look, I’ve been obsessed with nail polish for about 20 years now and I can tell you with 100% confidence: us ladies with dark skin can wear any nail color we want!
The thing I have noticed is that your skin’s undertone may affect how you view your nail color.
For example, I think I usually look terrible in yellow-greens and most blues; I have a yellow-peach undertone to my skin. Olive green, mint, and dark navy blues look great on my nails, though, in my opinion!
So if your skin’s undertone is on the reddish side, you may steer clear of most purples, pinks and blues. Try lavender, orange, or aqua if you want to wear nail polish in those color families.
If you have a cooler undertone to your darker skin, you probably are thinking that pale colors like pastel pink and “nude” beige, or neon colors like hot pink and bright yellow look bad on your nails.
It most likely looks worse in your head than other people see it, seriously!
But try wearing black, glitters, red, and brighter (but not neon) colors.
Dark skin tones with neutral (not really warm or really cool) undertones often look amazing with neutral/nude colors on the nails as well as just about anything! Especially purple, white and grey, in my opinion.
Nail color for dark skin — pay attention to nail shape and length!
A general tip I have for anyone who has darker skin like mine and wants to experiment with nail color is:
find the right nail shape for your fingers!
If you have long, bony fingers keep your nails shorter, rounded or “squ-oval” shaped.
Are your fingers on the shorter, chubbier side? Shape your nails longer and with an almond or claw-like point.
This helps balance things and makes any polish color look even better!
Also, keep your hands moisturized and your cuticles in check and you’ll look super polished, pun intended =)
